Black American Walnut

Juglans nigra, the eastern American black walnut

The diverse hues of black walnut heartwood range from a light, pale brown to a rich, dark chocolate brown, often featuring striking streaks of deeper brown. This captivating color palette can sometimes take on subtle undertones of grey, purple, or reddish tones. In contrast, the sapwood is a pale, yellowish-grey, nearly approaching white. Walnut's allure is further enhanced by its array of mesmerising grain patterns, including curl, crotch, and burl.

While the grain is typically straight, it can also manifest in more irregular formations. Walnut boasts a medium texture and a moderate natural luster, adding to its luxurious tactile qualities. As a tree species native to North America, the history of black walnut [Juglans nigra] is deeply intertwined with the traditions of native peoples, who utilised nearly every part of the tree for a diverse range of purposes. From making hair and clothing dyes, to consuming the walnuts raw or incorporating the bark and husks into medicinal treatments, to crafting tools, utensils, furniture, and beyond - black walnut has long been a versatile and invaluable resource.
